Emotional Regulation
At our Stable Moments program, we focus on teaching essential life skills, one of the notable ones being self-regulation. To understand self-regulation, it's crucial for the children to first grasp the basic concept of emotions, and be able to recognize when they're experiencing these feelings. We use interactive activities to teach body language, a fundamental element of emotional awareness. Our unique approach at Justins Place starts with the horse. We explain the body language of horses to the children, helping them infer the emotional state of the horse based on its physical stance and energy. We then encourage the children to recall instances when they felt various emotions like anger or happiness and to reflect on their body language, facial expressions, and energy during those moments. The goal is to help them establish a basic level of emotional awareness. With this foundation in place, we aim to progress towards teaching effective regulation skills.
