Hear from Caitlin- Volunteer

Many people refer to Disney Land as the happiest place on Earth. Those people haven’t volunteered at Justin’s Place yet.

I started volunteering for Justin’s Place in the fall of 2020. I had scrolled past an article about Justin’s Place on Facebook and I couldn’t help but be intrigued. I’ve always loved working with kids and I was looking for a volunteer opportunity, so I filled out my volunteer application. The next thing you know I was out at the farm, walking next to a child riding a horse, making sure he was safe at all times. Sound like a big responsibility? It’s the best one I’ve had in a long time.

I’ve encountered many magical moments at this farm, but my favorite was when one of our students had just gotten done with his lesson and we had dismounted him from his horse. He came around to the front of the TJ’s face to say goodbye and he looked up at TJ and just stood there staring at him in complete bliss. They stood there together touching cheek to cheek for what seemed like 10 minutes. Anytime I tell that story, or think about that moment, I can’t help but to get emotional.

Justin’s Place is so special. It is amazing how each student advances week after week. They become more confident in how they walk. They sit a little taller each time they sit on a horse. They can tell you about all of the barn animals-what they eat and what their names are. They remember what brushes to use and on which part of the horses body to use it on. They enjoy responsibility by learning how to muck and feed the animals. There are so many benefits that everyone who comes to Justin’s Place walks away with.

Each time I leave I feel lighter, more grateful, and overall happier. I’ll keep coming back for as long as they need the help. ❤️

Thanks for reading,

Caitlin
